Past Projects
The Jewish Influence:
Vienna to America
This program highlights how Jewish thought, business and
religion played an inherent role in the development of the
artistic culture of late 19th-century Vienna and parallels this
with the similarity of America's in the late 20th-century.
Composers featured include Schubert and Beethoven,
Herschel Garfien (USA), Bernd Franke (Germany), as well as
am improvised Klezmer "set".  program notes on this

The Shakespeare Concerts
A program combining vocal settings of Shakespearean
texts, incorporating a variety of instrumental ensembles
including string quartet. Most of the music on this program
is written by Joseph Summer, and capitalizes on many of
the unique skills of QX's individual players; in particular, his
20-minute tour-de-force “Dance of the Mechanics” tunes
the 1st violin down a half step, giving the work an eerie
“early music meets new music” sound.

Consent to Gravity
A multi-media realization of the philosophy of visionary
photographer Frederick Sommer, this 50-minute work
combines dance, film, singers and string quartet. Produced
in conjunction with the Newport-based dance troupe Island
Moving Company, the main body of music in the program is
written by Chris Eastburn but also uses large sections of
free improvisation, where QX plays off musical motives
created by each other or from the movements of the
dancers.

Developing Projects
The Flamenco Interface
Flamenco guitarist Juanito Pascual and QX
come together, bringing a fresh angle to
the flamenco sound. Juanito, described by
NPR as “one of the hottest flamenco
guitarists to emerge in recent years“ plays
some traditional flamenco tunes, while QX
mixes in some Villa-Lobos and Turina. The
five artists unite forces in a new work
written specifically for them by
“accomplished and exciting" Israeli
composer Lior Navok. Dancers can also be
incorporated.
Berio and Bartok:
Duet Metamorphosized
This program takes the listener on a
sonoric ethnic journey, beginning with the
highly idiomatic duets of these 20th
century masters, and follows the folkloric
underpinnings of their music as it
transforms into the abstract writing heard
in the quartets.
Double Zero
What was going on in the musical world as
we changed centuries? Hear what was
written for quartet as the clocks rolled over
to years 1800, 1900 and 2000. Works
from Beethoven’s Op. 18, and Ravel, as
well as modern-day bad boy Thomas Ades'
Arcadiana are featured. Dohnanyi can also
be substituted.

La Dolce Vita
QX traces the  evolution of the Italian string quartet, tracing
it's roots in polyphonic vocal writing and operatic influences
through to it's modernity. Works by Palestrina, Boccherini
and Berio are interspersed with Puccini's little-know fugues
and well-know "Crysantemi". The program culminates with
Verdi’s string quartet in a minor.
